A Turani noble and general of the Mughal armies, where he distnguished himself in various campaigns, Jang's original name was Mir Shahab-uddun and he was the son of Kulich Khan Sadr-us-Sudur. He was raised to the rank of an amir with the title of Firoz Jang, after his father's death, by the emperor 'Alamgir. His son was the renown Nizam-ul-Mulk 'Asaf Jah whose descendants are known to Europeans as Nizams of the Deccan. Jang had been blind for the last twenty years of his life, possibly due to an epidemic, but he continued to command armies.
