A Turani noble and general of the Mughal armies, where he distnguished
himself in various campaigns,
Jang's original name was Mir Shahab-uddun and he was the son of Kulich
Khan Sadr-us-Sudur. He was raised to the rank of an amir with the title
of Firoz Jang, after his father's death, by the emperor 'Alamgir. His
son was the renown Nizam-ul-Mulk 'Asaf Jah whose descendants are known
to Europeans as Nizams of the Deccan.
Jang had been blind for the last twenty years of his life, possibly
due to an epidemic, but he continued to command armies.
It was rumoured that the Emperor 'Alamgir had made his physicians take
out his eyes.
His remains were transported to Dehli, and interred in the yard of the
college built by him outside the Ajmiri Gate.
