Francisco succeeded his father in 1504, but as a minor, his mother assumed guardianship and governed the County of Oropesa until he came of age in 1509, after which he took control of his estates. He became a trusted confidant of Charles V, who assigned him significant duties, including accompanying Leonor, widow of Manuel I of Portugal, to Paris for her marriage to Francis I of France. The Queen of France wrote to him often, sharing her affection and recounting events at the Paris court. Forty-six letters of private correspondence between Francisco, Charles V, and his wife Isabel of Portugal have been preserved, detailing major political events such as the wars against France and the Turks, the conquest of Tunis, and the Lutheran Reformation. In 1529, he was proposed for the newly created vice-royalty of New Spain, but he did not assume the post, likely due to health reasons. Like his father, Francisco was a cultured man, deeply concerned with the religiosity and spirituality of his time. In 1528, he founded the Monastery of the Concepción in Oropesa.
