In the arts, he was a passionate figure, engaging with the leading intellectuals of his era. His election as member of the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country in 1777 was followed by his involvement with the Society of Friends of the Country in Seville the next year. He also took on the role of councillor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. Later in life, he became a patron of Goya, who painted almost every member of his family. However, after the Duke's implication in the 1795 plot against Godoy, he left the court and withdrew to his estates in Andalusia.
