On this journey, he demonstrated his liberal and generous spirit, for which reason the King commanded that he be honoured in his presence in 1577, making him a Grandee of Spain. He spent a large part of his life in his estates of Oropesa, caring for the welfare of his vassals and administering them with justice and generosity, to the point of having established a board or tribunal where all his subjects could present their complaints and decisions would be made according to justice, even if this was to the detriment of his own interests. The virtues of Juan went beyond the limits of his estates, and he became an example for all and a model of Christian knights.
