Luis served as captain of one of the companies of the Old Guard of Castile and was governor of the eight companies that went to Aragon in 1588. He became a Carmelite at the Monastery of Duruelo in Mancera in 1570.

Son of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo and Leonor de Ayala, he was married firstly to Mencía de Fonseca, with issue:

Luis was married secondly to Isabel de Leiva with issue:

• Pedro (see)
• Sancho, died aged 6
• Isabel de Mendoza, a Carmelite nun, Monastery of San Jose de Salamanca, 1588
• Luisa de Mendoza, Augustin nun, Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Madrigal
• Mariana, married to Diego del Aguila, no issue

Luis also had illegitimate issue:
