Luis served as captain of one of the companies of the Old Guard of Castile and was governor of the eight companies that went to Aragon in 1588. He became a Carmelite at the Monastery of Duruelo in Mancera in 1570.


Son of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo and Leonor de Ayala, he was married firstly to Mencía de Fonseca, with issue:
