| Audrey (–by 1559) Other names: Audrey Malte, Audrey Digneley, Ethelreda Biographical It was claimed that Audrey was the illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII and Jane Dingley (or Dobson); however, she was officially the illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII's tailor, John Malte, who referred to her in legal documents as 'my bastard daughter begotten upon the body of Joan Digneley' and made her his chief legatee in 1546. The earliest reference to her being Henry VIII's daughter comes from Nugae Antiquae, co-written by her stepson. She was married by 1554 to John Harington and had issue. |
