Prince Philip was a prominent figure in the modern British monarchy,
serving as consort to Queen Elizabeth II for over seven decades. Born
into Greek and Danish royalty, he received an education in France, Germany,
and the United Kingdom, including attending Gordonstoun School in Scotland.
His time there shaped his discipline and resilience, traits that would
define his later life. During World War II, Philip served in the Royal
Navy, where he took part in significant naval operations in both the
Mediterranean and Pacific theatres, rising to the rank of lieutenant
in 1942 and commander in 1950. After marrying Elizabeth, he renounced
his foreign titles, adopting the surname Mountbatten, and becoming a
British subject. Upon Elizabeth's ascension to the throne in 1952, Philip
took on the role of royal consort, undertaking numerous public engagements
and supporting over 800 organizations. He founded the Duke of Edinburgh's
Award in 1956, which focused on youth development and leadership. Known
for his direct approach and occasionally controversial comments, he
contributed to modernizing the monarchy, advocating for environmental
conservation, scientific progress, and technological advancement. Philip
retired from public duties in 2017 at the age of 96, having completed
over 22,000 engagements. He remained an influential figure in British
public life until his death in 2021, just two months before his 100th
birthday.
