Alix de Savoie
(1166–74)

Other names: Alais

Biographical

Alix's father accepted the offer of a meeting arranged by King Henry II of England, and it was held at Montferrand in 1173 for a proposed marriage between Henry's son, Prince John, and Alix. The marriage contract was formally sealed at Montferrand, with Count Humbert settling all his possessions on the young couple, provided that he should leave no male issue at his death. Humbert later enquired what land Henry would be giving to his son John, and Henry said that he would be giving the castles of Chinon, Loudun, and Mirebeau. At this, the smouldering discontent of John's brother, Henry (the Young King), burst into flames. He protested that he would never agree, his consent being necessary as he had been invested with Anjou where the castles were located.
Alix died unmarried in the following year.

Daughter of Humbert III de Savoie and Clemenza von Zähringen.
