Burchard left Aosta and apparently went to Lyon to seize power, installing himself as archbishop there. He submitted to Conrad II in 1034, but he did not enjoy the emperor's favour, and in 1036, he was captured and imprisoned, losing his archbishopric. The precise reason for his downfall is not certain. He was probably pardoned in 1038.
