Carlo was never officially recognised by his biological father, possibly because of his mother's low birth, the daughter of a merchant from Turin. He received a grant from the court between 1684 and 1686 for his studies at the college of nobles at Savoy. He joined the military and rose to the rank of captain.

Illegitimate son of Carlo Emanuele II di Savoia and N Piatta.
