Illegitimate, Carlo turned his second name, Umberto, into the surname for himself and his family. Educated in Mombasiglio, his father arranged a military career for him. He was present at the battle of Zuccarello against the Genoese in 1625. In the civil war of Piedmont, he opposed the regent Christine de France, and in 1639, he helped defend Cuneo against the French. He was sent to defend Oneglia against the Spanish in 1649. He was granted generous pensions in 1629, 1632, and 1644. He had purchased Mulazzano with Gonzole in 1627 and was invested the same day.

Illegitimate son of Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia and Virginia Pallavicino. He married Claudia Ferrero Fieschi after 1643, and had issue. He also had illegitimate issue.
