Gentleman of the bedchamber to François I
At the age of thirteen, Claude was a gentleman of the bedchamber to King
François I. He fought at Pavia in 1523 and was taken prisoner,
but was soon freed. He was then appointed to various posts, including
admiral of the seas for almost forty years. He travelled to Naples in
1528, and in 1533 he escorted the Pope from Marseille to Rome. In 1537
he defended Provence against Charles V, but was forced to flee. His second
wife, Françoise de Foix, had embraced the Reformation and Claude began
to enjoy the support of Protestants whose cause he was to embrace.
He was included in the order of succession of the duchy of Savoy in 1562.

Son of René de Savoie and Anna Lascaris. He was married firstly
to Marie de Chabannes (†1538) in 1534, and secondly to Françoise
de Foix in 1539, and had issue. He also ad illegitimate issue.
