In an ambitious attempt to create a second Savoyard state in central Italy
in 1731, and with the intention of it being administered by Eugène-Jean,
field marshal Prince Eugène of Savoy began complex negotiations to organise
the marriage of his nephew with Princess Maria Teresa Cybo.
As a general, he fought against the French at the Rhine. Eugène-Jean tended
to keep himself in the company of unsavoury characters and was said to
have led a dissolute private life.
He died suddenly from syphilis, unmarried.
Place of death: Mannheim
Son of Thomas de Savoie-Soissons and Maria Theresia of Liechtenstein.
