In 1678 Carlo Francesco was granted a pension and the fiefdoms of Carlo Amedeo delle Lanze, the husband of his mother. He had a career in the military and was in the service of his brother, Vittorio Amedeo II, King of Sardinia, and distinguished himself. In 1724 he was dismissed as governor of Savoy and ordered to remain at Vinovo. He was then charged with fraud and embezzlement, but before he could be arrested, he fled. His honours were revoked, and his assets confiscated, and he was sentenced to death in absentia. Carlo Francesco settled at Bologna as a fugitive and in poverty, and relied on assistance from the Bolognese nobility for the rest of his days.

Illegitimate son of Carlo Emanuele II di Savoia and Gabriella de Mesmes de Marolles (†1678). He married Barbara Piossasco di Piobesi in 1692 (†1721), and had issue.
