Gabriele was prepared for an ecclesiastical career, having been made an
abbot at a young age, however, he chose to enter the military. In 1645,
he joined Prince Tommaso of Savoy in the campaign against the Spanish
in Tuscany. As lieutenant general, he led the forces of Savoy in battle
against the Genoese, but he had little success. In 1681, he was sent to
quash a rebellion at Mondovì where he was successful after some
difficulties, but after he left, the rebellion rose again and he was forced
to return. When Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes 1686, Gabriele was
sent to confront the Waldesians as the Duke of Savoy took up arms against
the Calvinists within his own dominions.
