In 1636 Giuseppe was in Spain with his mother and siblings as hostages until 1644 when they returned to Paris. Giuseppe suffered a strong stutter which made his time at the French court difficult, as it was for his brother Emanuele Filiberto with his own disability. They returned to Piedmont in 1649.
Giuseppe died from smallpox.
