Isabella di Savoia
(1591–1626)


Biographical

Isabella was married to Prince Alfonso d'Este in 1608 after long and secret negotiations had begun in 1601. She was a woman of lively character, was charitable and religious, and had a passion for art. After her mother-in-law, Virginia de' Medici, had become mentally incapacitated, Isabella assumed some of her duties and she supported her father-in-law, Cesare d'Este, who found in her a competent adviser. Isabella's life was cut short after childbirth when she was overcome by an illness.
