Baron
de Cipières
René followed his father during all the civil wars of 1562 and
1563. In 1564 he accompanied Charles IX on his tour of France. After the
death of his father, he remained one of the most active leaders of the
Protestant party. He faced his own brother, Honoré, comte de Sommarive,
at the siege of Sisteron in 1562.
In 1568 he travelled to Provence to meet with leaders of the Protestant
party. There, he was besieged by an anti-Huguenot mob and he, along with
36 others, was murdered and his body mutilated. Suspicion over his murder
fell on his brother, Honoré.
