Biographical

Baron de Cipières

René followed his father during all the civil wars of 1562 and 1563. In 1564 he accompanied Charles IX on his tour of France. After the death of his father, he remained one of the most active leaders of the Protestant party. He faced his own brother, Honoré, comte de Sommarive, at the siege of Sisteron in 1562.
In 1568 he travelled to Provence to meet with leaders of the Protestant party. There, he was besieged by an anti-Huguenot mob and he, along with 36 others, was murdered and his body mutilated. Suspicion over his murder fell on his brother, Honoré.

Place of death: Fréjus

Son of Claude de Savoie and Françoise de Foix.
