Paolo and Francesca
da Rimini Oil on canvas, 279.4 by 194.3 cm, by Gustave Doré, 1863 Location unknown |

| Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, contemporaries of Dante, fell into a doomed affair after a proxy marriage arranged because Francesca would never have accepted Gianciotto, whose appearance was deliberately hidden by using his handsome brother in the ceremony. Here, they are shown placed by Dante in his Inferno, driven without rest through a violent storm as a sign of lust’s power to sweep lives towards tragedy. |
