(1863–1911) Biographical A socialite and patron of the arts, Mary befriended the painter John Singer Sargent after commissioning a portrait from him in 1892. The work advanced his career and helped him gain critical acclaim, particularly in England. Daughter of Owen Grant and Adelaide Higginson, she married Hugh Hammersley in 1889 and had issue. |
