Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck
Oil on panel, 47 x 34 cm, by Franz von Lenbach, 1890
The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore

Otto von Bismarck, the Iron Chancellor of Germany, is depicted in this striking portrait at the age of seventy-five. The painting captures not only his physical presence but also the weight of his legacy. His white uniform, adorned with gold accents, belongs to the Magdeburg Cuirassiers' Regiment No. 7, a prestigious cavalry unit. The yellow sash draped across his chest marks his distinction as a recipient of the Order of the Black Eagle, Prussia’s highest honour. The cross of the order rests at his right hip, while his left breast bears an array of medals, their details softened by delicate brushstrokes. Seated with a composed yet somewhat introspective posture, Bismarck’s gloved hands rest in his lap. His cuirassier’s helmet, slightly tilted upward, reveals his weathered face, characterised by his distinctive bushy eyebrows and thick moustache. His expression is contemplative, suggesting a man reflecting on the weight of his past actions and the course of history he helped shape.
