Main Events
A distinguished soldier, statesman, military leader and patron of the
arts, Guidobaldo spent his childhood in Mantua, receiving his education
there until 1523 when he returned to the della Rovere court to continue
his education at Pesaro. In 1539, he was forced to relinquish Camerino,
which he had inherited through his first wife, to the Pope. As duke, Guidobaldo
deserted the capital and spent much time in Pesaro and Venice. His reign
was uneventful, aside from a rebellion in 1573 over high taxes, which
he suppressed, however during this period, the arts flourished. He was
planning to pay homage to Henry III, the new king of France, when he fell
ill and died.
