In 1539, he was forced to relinquish Camerino, which he had inherited through his first wife, to the Pope. As duke, Guidobaldo deserted the capital and spent much time in Pesaro and Venice. His reign was uneventful, aside from a rebellion in 1573 over high taxes, which he suppressed, however during this period, the arts flourished. He was planning to pay homage to Henry III, the new king of France, when he fell ill and died.
