Alfonso came into conflict with his half-brother, King Juan I, and later with King Enrique III.
He had all his titles confiscated after rebelling against Juan in 1382. The Concord of Gijón on 18 June 1383 compensated him with the County of Valencia de Don Juan, but this too was confiscated for disloyalty, and he was imprisoned for six years in Almonacid Castle and Monreal Castle. He was released under Enrique III in 1392, but rebelled again. He was defeated in 1394 and exiled to France, where he tried to secure support for his cause in the English-held ports, but was unsuccessful.
