Nicoloso was confirmed as Count of Malta by King Manfred in 1257 and lived mostly in Genoa.
As head of the Genoese faction in Malta, he was in conflict with King Manfred of Sicily and lost his rights to Malta. This was resolved by a peace treaty between Genoa and Manfred in 1257, after which he was made Count of Malta in name only.

Son of Enrico di Castello and a daughter of Guglielmo Grasso, he had issue:
