Little is known of Lara after his appointment to the position of alcalde ordinario of Mexico City, and documentation indicates that he was absent during important events at the Cabildo. He was replaced in the following year. He drew up his will in 1601, and may have been in poor health.

Son of Juan de Cervantes and Luisa de Lara y Andrada, he married Isabel de Sosa Carvajal, daughter of the regidor Antonio de Carvajal, and María de Sosa, and had issue.
