Comte de Nantes (–852) Biographical Comte d'Anjou 846–52† Comte de Nantes 843–46 depr. Lay abbot of Hornbach? In 843, Lambert became Count of Nantes following the death of Count Rainald in battle against Herispoius, son of Nomenoe, and other Bretons near Métais; he asserted autonomy from Charles II ‘the Bald’ and rewarded his allies with Breton March honours. In 846, Charles II stripped Lambert of Nantes and compensated him with the county of Anjou, assigning him its defence. In the early 850s, Duke Nomenoe seized and razed Rennes and Nantes before retreating to Brittany. Lambert was slain fighting Gauzbert, Count of Maine, while his brother Werner was taken prisoner. Place of burial: Savenai, Anjou Son of Lambert and a daughter of Pepin I, King of Italy, he married Rotrude (daughter of Emperor Lothar I?), and had issue. |
