Liutwin of Trier
Bishop of Trier (–<722) Other names: Leudwin, Leodonius Biographical Bishop of Trier 705–<22† Bishop of Reims Bishop of Laon Of Frankish aristocratic descent whose family enjoyed notable standing under the Carolingians, Liutwin established the monastery at Mettlach around 690. Between c. 700 and 720, he was a dux, but when his uncle Basinus died in 705, Liutwin assumed the episcopal office of Trier. In time he also held the bishoprics of Reims and Laon, appointments likely conferred through the influence of Charles Martel. St Liutwin's feast day falls on the 29th of September. Place of death: Reims Place of burial: Mettlach, translated after 1483 Son of Gerwin and Gunza, he had issue. |
