Of Fethard, Tipperary, Barton was called to the Bar at King's Inns
in 1880 and served as a bencher there from 1885 to 1891. He entered
politics while continuing his legal career, becoming a barrister at
Gray's Inn in 1893 and a bencher the same year, later serving as treasurer
and resident bencher from 1922. He also held a number of other public
offices, including Commissioner of Irish Lights.
Barton retired in 1918. He was also an author.
Son of Thomas Barton and Hon Charlotte Plunket, he married Mary Manly,
