Rose Barton
(1856–1929)

Biographical

Member of the Royal Watercolour Society 1911
Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society 1893

A watercolourist, Barton built a career between Dublin and London, first exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1878 and in London from 1880, including the Dudley Gallery and the Society of Lady Artists. She trained in London under Paul Jacob Naftel and went on to exhibit widely, most notably with the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours and the Society of Women Artists, as well as in Cork in the early 1880s. Her work drew loosely from Impressionism, favouring plein air sketching, everyday subjects, bright colour and soft outlines, with a particular sensitivity to shifting light, weather and atmosphere. London scenes, especially Chelsea, rain soaked streets and fog, recur throughout her work, as do views around Trinity College Dublin, Irish houses and images of children. In 1904 she published Familiar London, illustrated with sixty one colour plates, offering insight into both her preferred sketching locations and her artistic outlook.
