Diego assumed his mother's surname and, with her support, continued the Miranda lineage, displacing and subduing other claimants to the family inheritance. He was successful in a number of lawsuits against his cousin Rodrigo, which ended in an agreement in 1468. He received the possessions left by the abbess Juana Enríquez, the apparent illegitimate daughter of Inés de Soto, his great-great-aunt, and Count Alfonso Enríquez, to the monastery of Santa Clara in Toledo. The monastery was unable to administer them due to the distance, and Diego was therefore chosen to receive them. His ownership was confirmed by royal order in 1490. The territories included Soto de los Infantes, Salas, Miranda, Grado, Valdés, Navia, Allande, Tineo, Cangas del Narcea, Somiedo and Babia He founded the family mayorazgo in 1504.
