Joaquín served in the military from 1808 to 1817, and participated
in the conflict against the French army as a captain of the 1st Grenadier
Company of the 32nd Numantine Battalion, taking part in the actions in
Almazán in July 1810. For his military deeds, he was awarded various
distinctions. Joaquín was a rich landowner and significantly increased
his assets through the Mendizábal disentailment of 1836. His substantial
wealth secured him a position in the Chamber of Procurators for the province
of Soria in 1834. The law required a high economic threshold for eligibility,
being twelve thousand reales, and there were very few people in Soria
who were eligible.
