Titular Kings and Queens of Jerusalem, and Claimants

Following the First Crusade, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established in 1099, with Godfrey of Bouillon assuming leadership, though he declined the royal title; his brother Baldwin I was crowned the first king in 1100. The kingdom, though geographically limited and frequently embattled, developed a formal monarchy that lasted until the fall of Acre in 1291. After the loss of its territory, the title 'King of Jerusalem' persisted as a claim among various European dynasties. It passed through the houses of Lusignan, Anjou, and Habsburg, often by inheritance or dynastic marriage. Although the title lost all territorial significance, it continued to be used in ceremonial form. Today, several royal houses maintain rival claims to the title, most prominently the Spanish and Neapolitan branches of the House of Bourbon, as well as the House of Savoy, while other dynasties, such as the Habsburg-Lorraines, may be regarded as potential claimants owing to historical ties, despite making no formal assertion. These claims, entirely symbolic, are retained as part of historical titulature rather than any practical assertion of sovereignty.
