Religious Houses Dependant of the Langues of the Order of Malta

The estates of the Order of the Knights of Malta, distributed across the Langues, were structured hierarchically to ensure administrative efficiency and revenue generation. Each Langue comprised priories or grand priories, which in turn were divided into bailiwicks. These bailiwicks were further subdivided into preceptories, later more commonly referred to as commanderies from the thirteenth century onward. Preceptories were led by preceptors, while commanderies were overseen by commanders. This organisational structure, rooted in the feudal system, enabled the Order to consolidate its vast territorial holdings across Europe. These estates were not merely administrative centres but also served as the primary source of income for the Order, funding its military, religious, and charitable activities, including its defence of Christendom and care for pilgrims. The Langues' structure reflected the geographic and cultural diversity of the Order, which evolved over centuries, particularly after the fall of the Crusader states and the Order's subsequent relocations.
