Church of Ireland
The
autonomous Church of Ireland is part of the worldwide Anglican
Communion, and is the second-largest Christian church in Ireland.
It emerged during the English Reformation, breaking away from
Rome in 1536. Organised into dioceses, it is led by the Archbishop
of Armagh and the Archbishop of Dublin, who hold the titles
of Primate of All Ireland and Primate of Ireland, respectively.
Its influence declined in the 19th century, as the Catholic
Emancipation Act and the disestablishment of the church in
1871 marked important milestones in Irish religious and political
history. Today, the Anglican Church of Ireland is a minority
denomination in the denomination in the predominantly Catholic
country, but it continues to be an important part of Ireland's
diverse religious landscape.
