| Pasiphae
Biographical Pasiphae became the victim of a divine curse after Minos sought to reclaim the Cretan throne by praying to Poseidon for a bull from the sea as proof of his divine favour, promising to sacrifice it in return. After Poseidon granted his request, Minos broke his vow by keeping the magnificent animal. As punishment, Poseidon caused Pasiphae to fall in love with the bull, although some accounts attribute the curse to Aphrodite, either because Pasiphae scorned her worship or because the goddess sought revenge after Helios revealed her affair with Ares. Pasiphae enlisted Daedalus to construct a hollow wooden cow that enabled her to deceive the bull, and their union produced the Minotaur. Renowned for her knowledge of sorcery and her fierce jealousy, she later cursed Minos so that venomous creatures would kill any woman with whom he lay. The curse was later lifted by Procris. Daughter Helios and Perseis, she was married to King Minos of Crete, and was also the mother of the Minotaur by a bull |
