Martial Deny (1745–?)

Very little is known about the life of French engraver and publisher Martial Deny, the brother of Jeanne Deny, also an engraver. The siblings were likely trained in the studio of Jean-Jacques Le Veau, a prominent figure in Parisian printmaking circles. Their collaborative output was substantial, and attribution between their works is often complicated by overlapping signatures and identical techniques. Among their most notable commissions were the illustrations for the 1778 edition of Romans et Contes de Voltaire, published in Bouillon by the Société Typographique. These engravings, executed after designs by Monnet, Marillier, and Moreau le Jeune, reflect the satirical and philosophical tone of Voltaire’s prose and were widely praised for their narrative clarity and ornamental finesse. Martial and Jeanne also contributed to Costumes Français, a celebrated series of hand-coloured etchings published by Chéreau in Paris, depicting members of the French royal family in contemporary dress. The designs, attributed to Claude-Louis Desrais, capture the elaborate fashions of the Ancien Régime with theatrical precision.
