A view of the entrance to the former Fossé-des-Tanneurs canal in Strasbourg, alongside the façade of the Maison de Béguines, which housed lay religious women living a semi-monastic life. The canal was originally used by leather tanners in the medieval Petite France district and was an essential part of the city’s industrial infrastructure as early as the 13th century. However, due to sanitation concerns and urban development, it was gradually filled in during the 19th century and transformed into a street. |
