Resurrection (Memorial to Two Sisters)
Wood, 110.97 × 132.08 cm, by Milly Steger, c. 1918–23
The Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut
This piece is carved from the fork of a tree where two branches converge.
It is a remarkable expression of rhythmic counterpoint—an achievement
rarely found in sculpture from this period—capturing the poignant expressions
of two children: one as she awakens after death, and the other still
deep in sleep.
