Orthodox Church of Antioch and All the East
The Greek Orthodox Church (Patriarchate) of Antioch is
one of the oldest and most important Christian churches
in the world, having traditionally being founded in Antioch
in the first century AD by the Apostles Peter and Paul.
It quickly spread throughout the Middle East and North
Africa, and by the fourth century AD, it was one of the
largest and most influential Christian churches in the
world. Today, the patriarchate is headquartered in Damascus,
with a presence in over 20 countries, and its membership
is estimated to be around 1.5 million people. The majority
live in the Middle East, but there are also significant
populations in North America, Europe, and Australia. The
patriarchate is a self-governing church in communion with
the other Orthodox patriarchates and churches. Its teachings
and practices are based on the Nicene Creed and the Seven
Ecumenical Councils.
