Antonio de Holanda (c. 1485–1577)

A miniaturist and portrait painter, Antonio was originally from the Netherlands, though the exact place of his birth remains unclear. He moved to Portugal around 1516 and became a pursuivant at the College of Arms in 1520. Employed first by King Manuel I as a miniaturist, he later worked in 1529 for Emperor Charles V and his wife, Isabel of Portugal, creating portraits and altarpieces. In 1540, he served as a heraldic painter to King John III. He was also known for illuminating religious texts, producing works for various convents and monasteries, and even illuminating maps. Antonio's collaboration with Simon Bening on the Genealogical Tree of the Royal House of Portugal remains one of his most highly regarded pieces. Only a few of his works survive today. He was the father of the painter Francisco de Holanda. It is generally believed that Antonio died in Lisbon.
