Phocas
Byzantine Emperor

(547–610)

Biographical

Byzantine Emperor 602–10 dep

Phocas, possibly a centurion
of modest origins from Thrace, rose to prominence in 602 when the army rebelled against Emperor Maurice and chose him as their commander. Sent to Constantinople, he capitalised on concurrent unrest within the capital to secure his own advancement, culminating in the execution of both Emperor Maurice and his son. His early rule was characterised by religious diplomacy: he affirmed the pope’s authority in spiritual matters, winning praise from Gregory I and fostering good relations with Rome. In 604, he negotiated a peace settlement with the Avars, agreeing to a higher annual tribute. However, the alliance between Maurice and Khosrow II led to reprisals—Persian forces invaded Asia Minor, advancing to the Bosporus by 608. At the same time, Phocas’s persecution of Jews and miaphysite Christians stirred discontent in the Eastern provinces, and his increasingly tyrannical rule in Constantinople sparked riots across several cities. The combined pressure from the Persians and internal unrest prompted the exarch of Carthage to rebel; in 610, his son Heraclius arrived, deposed and executed Phocas, and was declared emperor in October of that year. Today, a column bearing Phocas' name is extant in the Roman Forum.

Son of Domentiza and an unnamed father, he married Leontia, and had Domentiza, who married Priscus in 607.
